Mirza Aziz defends fuel price hike

Finance and planning adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam Tuesday defended the energy price hike and said it would halt any smuggling of fuels out of the country. The adviser faced a question on the alleged transport fare chaos, a day after the government hiked energy prices by 33-50 percent. "Anarchy sets in everywhere in the world when oil prices are adjusted. It is not unique to Bangladesh," the adviser said. "Oil prices are much higher in neighbouring countries than in Bangladesh. The government has adjusted oil prices as there was the possibility of oil being smuggled out," said Mirza Aziz after a meeting of food planning at the food ministry Tuesday.
